According to Wartburg College, RICE Day supports several goals of the college's strategic plan, lifting up the importance of deep and integrative learning experiences, vocational discernment, mentoring relationships, and telling the Wartburg story.
In lament terms, Rice Day is about Wartburg College students showing off what they have learned during their time at Wartburg and putting it to the test through a public demonstration of a project they have worked on for a semester.
Here in the Journalism and Communications Department, rather than writing a 30-page paper, we shoot a 10–15-minute documentary about a topic given to us by the heads of the department. From there it is our job to create a documentary that tells the story of the journey, life, or achievements of a person, organization or topic in 10-15 minutes while demonstrating all the skills we have learned in our time at Wartburg.
Obviously in 14 weeks (about 3 months), alongside a full schedule of classes, no person could complete these alone. This is why we are allowed to choose 5-6 people to work within the department to create our documentaries. This team is designed to show off people's skills based on what they work best on. Some are better at videography than editing, some better at editing than writing, and some better at writing than anything else. All that is put together makes one solid team. But that is just the Journalism and Communication Department. Outside of the department Rice Day has a bigger meaning.
RICE Day or Research, Internship, and Creative Endeavor. Participating departments include Business Administration, Accounting & Economics; Education; English & Modern Languages; Music; Social Work; Art; History; Religion & Philosophy; Journalism & Communication; Social Sciences; Biology; Biochemistry, Chemistry & Engineering Science; and Mathematics, Computer Science & Physics. There also will be presentations by students who participated in the college’s Urban Studies Program.
RICE Day is meant to make the world better through research and projects here at Wartburg College. It is a showcase of the bright minds that have been shaped and molded at Wartburg College. These minds are those of seniors preparing to enter the world and make a difference. .
RICE Day in 2023 will be taking place on Tuesday April 4 and in the Journalism and Communications Department, 3 groups will present from 2:30-3:30 over their documentary subjects. All are welcome to see what the Capstone students of the department have created
